The Dunes

White Sands National Park is a breathtakingly unique destination, offering a variety of activities such as hiking, sand sledding, and admiring stunning sunsets along its scenic trails. The park's iconic dunes are made of gypsum sand, created from the evaporation of Lake Lucero. Over time, weathering breaks down the gypsum crystals into fine sand, which is sculpted into mesmerizing dunes by strong desert winds. In addition to its natural beauty, the park is rich in history. Visitors can explore fascinating artifacts that reveal the ancient origins of the dunes, as well as Ice Age fossilized footprints. The on-site visitor center features engaging exhibits that highlight the park’s unique geology, diverse wildlife, and cultural history, providing a deeper appreciation for this extraordinary landscape.
